There's A Garden In You

“There’s a Garden in You,” was one of those songs that was written within half an hour and immediately sounded more or less exactly as you hear it on the record. I was walking home one day and passed by a really sickly sweet smell on the sidewalk, maybe rotting flowers or something, and wrote out the lyrics. By the time I got home, I sat down and demoed the song as I wrote it, starting with the droning lead part that ushers it all in. It’s a self song- an affirmation song. There’s a garden in us all. Some may tend to their garden and keep it trim and tame, some may let it grow wild. Sometimes we let it wither. But no one is a wholly diligent gardener, just as no one is an entirely neglectful one either. I sometimes view it as a relationship song in that way. A conversation between ourselves at various points. We may at times betray certain aspects of ourselves, maybe we don’t. It sounds serious, and to some degree it is, but it’s also a funny song. The big joke is the first line, “Smelled a smell so sweet it made me sick.”
